Is another good idea


The message from yesterday was asking "What's the opposite of a good idea?".

A bunch of responses —myself included not long ago— said "A bad idea".

And it makes sense.... if we're living in a world of dualities, win-lose, zero-sum, black and white.

But that's not the case. :)

Listening to this amazing conversation between Rick Rubin and Rory Sutherland, here's what Rory said:

"The opposite of a good idea is another good idea."

Because creativity (and originality) is not about beating the others; it's about grabbing something and making it better, approach it better, or different. It's about building up on things you've got influence from, through your own lens (of life).

Rubin comes back with "There's a rule [in my work with bands]: We demonstrate everything. Instead of me telling you my musical idea, I play you my musical idea."

Here's the thing

Music, business and life are not about winning arguments, beating the others, or convincing. They're about how we can play.

Because if you get to think of how you can present an option to a good idea, you're building up and raising the bar.

And that's a world your customers would love to live in.

The wrong focus. On customers that are not profitable. On products that no one needs. On numbers (revenue, sales), over profits. On people who just won't do the thing or put the work. Choosing is hard, yet simple. You've always known what you should do. Take that first next step and just start.

To deliver surprise you need to be comfortable with risk. No risk, and you'll be expected, predictable. And if you want to stand out in your market, predictability works in favor of your competitors. Awe them. Awe your customers.

During a conversation this past week, I heard that. That raising your prices 5X or 10X, or charging one client different (probably 10X more) from another is not fair. Or that it's wrong. What are your thoughts on that?
